SnapSearch: An Android Image-Based Search Engine for a Museum Environment

Shazia Akbar

The advancement of technology has influenced the tourist market greatly with several interactive devices being found in museums such as 3D theatres, avatars and interactive tables. SnapSearch takes this level of interaction further by allowing the customer’s experience to be taken outside the four walls of a museum and into the public domain where the widely growing market of smartphone users can gain an insight into an often enclosed tourist society.
Object recognition is a large research topic within computing which entails the processing of 2D images in order to extract recognizable features. This project uses SIFT descriptors to perform object recognition from low quality images captured through an Android smartphone. More specifically, this application has been implemented for museum artefacts where intricate patterns and textiles are used across multiple collections which are on display throughout the year. This application has been designed to allow smartphone users to search for an artefact through a captured image which is processed and matched against a controlled database.

My name is Shazia Akbar and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University Of Dundee studying Applied Computing after which I wish to apply the skills and knowledge I have learned to date to research and development in the computing industry.
