Using subtitles and captions to support second language learning

The goal of the project was to build a new software tool to support second language learning by using subtitles and captions displaying on the screen synchronizing with the video. A simple interface of the software would be built by using Flash for users to switch on/off the subtitles and captions, take notes for the unknown word, check notes and look up the unknown word. As the developer is a Chinese, the focus group of this software is Chinese people who want to learn English as a second language. Questionnaires, interviews and paper prototyping had been used before the design of the software in the purpose of collecting requirement of the software and investigating the problems which Chinese students have faced when they learn English.

The software was evaluated by a group of ‘3+1+1’ Chinese visiting students and MSc Chinese students of University of Dundee. The result of evaluation showed that it would be very useful to help people improve English study.
