The coffee table of the future

Mark Mackercher

In the not too distant future, it is projected that the technology for touch screen, table top computers may be affordable and the right size to fit into a typical family’s living room and budget. The purpose of this project was to explore ideas of what a typical family may wish to use such a device for. After some consideration it was decided to focus on the aspect of television listings due to the television being the focal point and most time consuming aspect of a typical family’s living room. This decision was also coupled with the fact that the current format and medium of displaying television listings were lacking in certain areas; most prominently use by multiple people and the ability to personalise the experience. The main focus of this project then became to create a user interface and user experience that took advantage of the Microsoft Surface platform whilst trying to combat the shortcomings of the current methods. During the process, it was found that users want a simple yet informative user interface that can convey key information quickly and easily whilst allowing multiple family members use the application at the same time.
