Rover Route Planner

The study of Mars has been an important part of space exploration programs since the 1960s. The challenges faced by missions to Mars are significant, with roughly two thirds of previous efforts resulting in failure. With current technology, human exploration of the planet is not possible. Therefore other methods, such as the use of autonomous craft, have to be employed. With the substantial financial costs associated with Mars exploration, extensive mission planning is essential.
Because of the vast distance between Earth and Mars, controlling exploration craft in real-time is impossible. For this reason, scientists have to provide exploration vehicles with instruction in advance; resulting in mission planning being of paramount importance.
The purpose of Rover Route Planner was to provide a method of plotting and testing routes for semi-autonomous rovers to traverse.
The development of the project came from user centred design using Rapid Application Development. Feedback from participants who took part in the evaluation of the system was positive, with the application proving to be intuitive and easy to use. This outcome of this project was of mixed success. While the final solution proves a method for plotting routes, a simulation of the rovers traversing these routes was not able to be implemented as a part of this application.
